Living Well in the In Between

"Though the winter is long
Even richer the harvest it brings
Though my waiting prolongs
Even greater Your promise for me
Like a seed, I believe that my season will come."
—from “Seasons,” by Chris Davenport, Benjamin Hastings & Ben Tan (Hillsong Worship)

To everything, there is a season.
But what if you are in between seasons? What if you are in that frequently visited place of transition, of waiting, of wondering what’s next?
Big stuff. Everyday stuff.
Should I sit and ride it out? Should I think until my head hurts about what I could do, and how, and where?
Should I have a vision for the future? Should I simply focus on today?
What should I do? What am I doing here? What’s my next purpose?
Good questions in search of good answers that don’t always seem to jump off the page.
Whether younger or older.
So, now what?
There is always this: Glorify.
Not just sing songs from your heart in church,
But glorify from your heart in the everyday, every season, the God who made you, gives you every breath, and loves you with reckless abandon:
Never Failing, Unchanging, Unstoppable, Forever Faithful….
"So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.”—Romans 12:1-2, Message
Even while in the land of in-between, open your mouth, empty your lungs, move your eyes, hands, and feet.
Get up, get dressed, and go light your world with Him, or as one dictionary puts it:
"to light up brilliantly … Chandeliers glorified the entire room."
Just. Be.
In the words of Mr. Rogers: "Let's think of something to do while we're waiting."
Better still, in the words of Charles Spurgeon…

“Lord, help me to glorify Thee…
I have talents; help me to extol Thee by spending them on Thee.
I have time; Lord, help me to redeem it, that I may serve Thee.
I have a heart to feel; Lord, let that heart feel no Love but Thine, and glow with no flame but affection for Thee.
I have a head to think; Lord, help me to think of Thee and for Thee;
Thou has put me in the world for something—Lord, show me what that is, and help me to work out my life purpose…

I am all Thine—take me, and enable me to glorify Thee now,
in all that I say, in all that I do, and with all that I have.”

In every season, so be it.

  1. This one feels like I'm reading my own journal! For me, as I ponder, it comes down to this one thing I know... "to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with my God." Yes, and Glorify- in this in-between season, may my ordinary days bring pleasure to the One who loves me so well. Thanks again, Steve!
